Dos Perros restaurant to open in downtown Durham

June 22nd, 2007

Restaurateur Charlie Deal announced today he'll be opening a new restaurant in downtown Durham. Dos Perros will be a restaurant, taqueria and bar featuring classic Mexican cuisine, such as authentic moles, exquisite seafood, slow-roasted meats, aguas frescas, and hand-made margaritas. Durham will get a preview of Dos Perros at “Durham Rising” this Saturday, June 23rd, where Deal will serve traditional aguas frescas, or fresh fruit juices. The restaurant is slated to open in early 2008.

Dos Perros, named after his two loveable mutts, will be a departure from Deal's popular Asian bistro Jujube. He launched Chapel Hill-based Jujube in 2004 after he and his wife, Diana, relocated from California. Durham residents, the Deals have been inspired by the growing interest in revitalizing downtown Durham.

“Durham has an exciting dining scene, and an energy that Diana and I really want to be a part of,” says Deal. “We believe that Dos Perros will complement the other dining choices in Durham. Dos Perros will combine traditional Mexican cuisine with a lively, updated, and stylish atmosphere.”

The restaurant will serve lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, providing the opportunity for diners to explore the traditions of Mexican cuisine. Dos Perros will have a full bar and outdoor seating.

In order to remain consistent with the LEED certified green building elements of Greenfire Development, as well as uphold his own beliefs in an ecologically responsible lifestyle, Dos Perros will conduct its day-to-day operations in a similar manner. This includes buying locally farmed and raised products, recycling (including rainwater, vegetable oils, and produce scraps for compost), and many other considerations.

Dos Perros will be located at Rogers Alley, a trio of historic buildings currently undergoing a transformation by Greenfire Development. Rogers Alley is located at the intersection of City Hall plaza, N. Mangum, and E. Parrish Streets. The buildings include the Fire Station, Pharmacy, and Garrett-Sullivan Buildings and are joined by a common alley. They are slated to be a mix of retail and restaurant, office, and residential space and renovations are expected to be completed by late 2007.
