When Greenfire first began acquiring and renovating buildings in downtown Durham, strong public-private partnerships were invigorating American Tobacco to the south and West Village to the west, but there was still significant disinvestment in the City Center. We saw an opportunity to reactivate the City Center neighborhood, making connections between these existing developments.
Now, more than $1 billion of investment is planned in downtown Durham—in streetscape improvements, private developments, and new government services facilities. To capture this momentum, Durham underwent an extensive public downtown master planning process, led by Downtown Durham Inc. and adopted by the City and County of Durham. At Greenfire, we have aligned our efforts with the 2007 Downtown Durham Master Plan. With commitment, leadership and partnership from the City, County, and Greenfire, the City Center can once again be a place of creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
